In 1968, Brian Tyedin moved with his family to Doncaster where he attended Templestowe High School, and he has remained in the area since that time. For over 40 years, Brian worked as a dentist on Doncaster Road but says he has “always been involved with the community beyond my professional role.” It is this lifelong dedication to the community that has earned him the title of Manningham’s Citizen of the Year.
Brian was recognised by Manningham Council for 25 years of service within the Rotary organisation and “his tireless support and service to the local community.” He hopes this award will create further opportunities to collaborate with other organisations, to continue to help and support the community. He described receiving the award as an honour but credited his success to the support of the Rotary Club of Manningham City, 96.5 Inner FM and his wife, Jenny. “Volunteering is never a solo endeavour,” he said. “It requires teamwork, and I’ve been fortunate to work with some remarkable individuals who share my passion for making a difference.”
Brian says that Rotary is a “humanitarian movement of volunteers who give their time to help others in the community.” Rotary gives structure, support and connections which allow him to make an impact. Over the years, he has served as Rotary president four times and has helped organise community events including the Primary School Speech Competition and the Manningham Family Festival. He has also been involved with other community organisations and local churches.
In addition to his work with Rotary, Brian is also the president of 96.5 Inner FM, which broadcasts local events, like Carols by Candlelight and the Manningham Family Festival among others. He also hosts two of his own programs – “Weekday Wellness,” which focuses on health issues and local news, and “Shall We Dance,” a program about ballroom dance music. Weekday Wellness also has monthly interviews with the Mayor to keep the community informed of important developments.
As if his work with Rotary and Inner FM weren’t enough, Brian stays even busier by delivering Manningham Life and the Neighbourhood Watch newsletter, which he describes as a “simple way to stay connected to my neighbours.” He has also provided CPR and defibrillator training, as well as dental health talks to community groups. Brian also regularly attends a ballroom dance group, which he has been part of for over 20 years, a passion he shares with his wife.
When reflecting on his desire to volunteer, Brian credits his Christian faith, which he says has “played a crucial role in shaping my life and guiding my choices.” He says, “The greatest reward in serving others comes from knowing you’ve made a positive difference in someone’s life, and I believe that’s what we’re all called to do.” His advice to others is simple, “Surround yourself with positive people, hold on to your faith, find a purpose in life, and strive to make a difference in the world.”
