BirdLife Australia is inviting all Australians to participate in the 11th annual Aussie Bird Count, one of the country’s largest and most popular citizen science events. Tens of thousands of people are expected to join, and all you need to take part is your smartphone.

From 14 - 20 October, Australians of all ages and experience levels will head outdoors to explore green spaces—whether it's their backyard, a park, or a local wetland. While enjoying the experience of discovering local bird species, they'll also be helping BirdLife Australia gather valuable data about the birds in their area.

“Last year, over 60,000 people counted more than 3.5 million birds ‒ but we’re hoping this year might be our biggest yet,” said Sean Dooley, BirdLife Australia’s “chief bird nerd” and Senior Public Relations Advisor.

“Over the last decade, the Aussie Bird Count has helped Australians better understand the birds we share our lives with. It has provided an annual snapshot of how our birds are faring." (Media Release, BirdLife Australia)

To join this year’s Aussie Bird Count, simply register at www.aussiebirdcount.org.au and download BirdLife Australia’s free Aussie Bird Count app. Between 14 and 20 October, spend 20 minutes in one location observing birds, and use the app to easily record your sightings.
